BDoT traffic calming survey feedback
Previously, BDoT gave a list of candidate streets for traffic calming.
The consideration during this meeting is for BDoT to do a survey of those streets for possible traffic calming.
After speaking with BDoT, 53rd and 58th streets are the two with the highest frequency of speeding. Based on this data, the CSNA board recommended that these two streets should be the first priority.
Forrest Johnson, PE spoke and answered questions.
Traffic calming is not only speed cushions.
They meet monthly with Birmingham Fire & Rescue to make sure that any design changes will not impact response times.
Traffic calming is primarily used on local roads and not on faster routes like arterial roads.
They are in the process of re-striping 12th Ave S, but it’s been too cold for the striping to stick.
Stop signs are not for speed control.
If there is not frequent speeding on a street, that street will not be considered for traffic calming.
If BDoT installs a speed cushion/bump, they put up standard signage (per MUTCD).
If we want to request a lowering of speed limits, that can be done by the neighborhood.
letsgobhm.com has a survey that individuals can complete to provide feedback to BDoT
Motion made by John Davis to select 53rd and 58th are primary and 12th Ave S by the crosswalk to the Clairmont Trail as a backup for the traffic calming survey by BDoT. Motion was seconded by Bethany Fattore.
Motion approved by all except for 1 against.
